The four personality colors

The four colors describe what you value most. Orange wants freedom and action, Gold wants order and duty, Blue wants connection and meaning, and Green wants understanding and competence. Nobody is only one color, and your second color often explains the parts of you the first one misses.

Bold and spontaneous

Orange

Oranges live for action, freedom and fun. They are quick on their feet, love a challenge and learn by doing. Routine bores them; a deadline, a game or a dare wakes them up.

At their best: Thinks fast in a crisis, makes things fun and gets people off their chairs.

Overused: Can be impulsive, skip the boring steps and leave plans unfinished.

Needs: Freedom, variety, hands-on work and quick wins.

Animals with this streak: Cheetah, Monkey, Fox

Organised and responsible

Gold

Golds value order, duty and doing things properly. They plan ahead, keep their promises and are the reason the group turns up on time. They like rules that make sense and people who follow through.

At their best: Keeps the group organised, reliable and prepared for what comes next.

Overused: Can be rigid, worry too much and struggle when plans change at the last minute.

Needs: Clear expectations, a plan, and people who keep their word.

Animals with this streak: Beaver, Penguin, Elephant

Warm and caring

Blue

Blues put relationships first. They are empathetic, encouraging and tuned in to how everyone feels. They want work and life to mean something, and they bring people together.

At their best: Makes people feel heard, builds trust and keeps the group kind to each other.

Overused: Can take criticism personally, avoid conflict and give more than they have.

Needs: Harmony, appreciation, and real connection with people.

Animals with this streak: Dolphin, Dog, Deer

Curious and logical

Green

Greens want to understand how things work. They are independent thinkers who question assumptions, love a hard problem and value competence. They would rather be right than popular.

At their best: Spots the flaw in the plan, finds a smarter way and stays calm under pressure.

Overused: Can seem cool or distant, over-analyse and dismiss feelings as irrelevant.

Needs: Interesting problems, autonomy, and reasons that make sense.

Animals with this streak: Owl, Hawk, Chameleon

Printable color personality test (PDF)

The PDF has the same 15 rows on three pages, ready for a class, workshop or team meeting:

  1. The test. 15 rows of four words. Circle the one most like you in each row. Every word has a small shape next to it, so people answer before they know which style is which.
  2. Scoring and answer key. Count the shapes you circled, then read what each style means at its best, when overused and what it needs.
  3. Group tally sheet. Room for 18 names plus discussion questions, so the whole room fits on one page.

US Letter, prints fine on A4. No email needed.

Running it with a group

Hand out page 1, give people five quiet minutes, then share the answer key. Put everyone on the tally sheet and pick one or two of these questions:

  • What is your color at work, and is it different at home?
  • Which color do you clash with most, and what does that color need?
  • What does your color do when it is stressed, and how can others tell?
  • Which color is missing in this group, and what might we overlook because of it?

Colors, DISC and animals

The colors sort people by what they value. The DISC personality test and the 4 animal personality test sort people by how they behave, so it is normal to land somewhere different on each. Want more than four options? The free animal personality test scores six traits and matches you to one of 31 animals.

Quick answers

What are the four personality colors?
Orange (bold, spontaneous, action-first), Gold (organised, responsible, plans ahead), Blue (warm, caring, people-first) and Green (curious, logical, independent). Most people have one main color and a strong second.
Is this the True Colors personality test?
No. True Colors® is a trademarked program from True Colors International. Many four-color tests use the same Orange, Gold, Blue and Green idea, which goes back to David Keirsey's four temperaments. This version uses our own word lists and is free to print.
Is the color personality test free to print?
Yes. Download the PDF and copy it for a classroom, youth group, workshop or team. No sign-up or email is needed.
How long does it take?
About three to five minutes. There are 15 rows of four words and you pick the one most like you in each.
Is it good for students?
Yes. The words are everyday ones, so it works from about age 11 up, and the tally sheet makes it an easy lesson starter: group the class by color and ask each group what they need from the others.
What if I score the same on two colors?
You are a blend. Read both colors. Gold/Blue and Orange/Green are common pairs, and so are their opposites.
