The 3 animal personality test

Name your three favorite animals, and three words for why you like each one. Don't read ahead: the meaning is revealed once you have answered.

Your favorite animal
Your second favorite animal
Your third favorite animal

What the three animals mean

  1. Your first animal is how you see yourself. The words you picked are the qualities you believe you have, or like to think you have.
  2. Your second animal is how other people see you. Friends and colleagues tend to notice these qualities first.
  3. Your third animal is who you really are. The side that comes out when you are relaxed, tired or with the people closest to you.

The fun is in the gap between the three. Someone who sees themselves as a lion, comes across as a dolphin and is really a sloth usually gets a laugh of recognition from their friends.

How to play the 3 animal test with friends or a team

  1. Ask everyone to write down their three favorite animals, in order, with three words for each.
  2. Do not explain anything yet. The reveal only works if nobody knows the meanings.
  3. Reveal one meaning at a time and go round the group for each.
  4. Finish on the third animal, and ask whether the group agrees.

Other animal personality tests

The 3 animal test reads back your own words. For a test that looks at how you actually behave, the free animal personality test asks 20 everyday questions and matches you to one of 31 animals. The 4 animal personality test sorts people into Lion, Otter, Golden Retriever and Beaver, and the DISC personality test does the same with letters.

Quick answers

What is the 3 animal personality test?
A quick party game. You name your three favorite animals in order and say why you like each one. Then you learn the twist: the first animal is how you see yourself, the second is how other people see you, and the third is who you really are.
What does the third animal mean?
In the usual version, the third animal is the real you: the side people only see once they know you well. It is often the most surprising answer, which is why it is saved for last.
Is the 3 animal test real psychology?
No. It is a fun projection game, not a scientific test. The words you choose say something about what you value, which is why it can feel accurate, but nobody should make decisions from it.
Why do the words matter more than the animal?
Because two people can love the same animal for different reasons. If you love owls because they are wise, that is a different answer from loving them because they stay up all night. The game reads back your own words.
Is there a version with four animals?
Some versions add a fourth animal for how you see your partner, or swap the second for how you want to be seen. The 4 animal personality test (Lion, Otter, Golden Retriever, Beaver) is a different test that sorts people into four work styles.
Can I play it with a group?
Yes. Ask everyone to write down three animals and three words each before you explain anything, then reveal the meanings one at a time. It works well as an icebreaker at work or on a video call.
