  2. The answer key. Which animal each column is, how to read a blend, and what each animal looks like at its best, when overused, and what it needs from others.

Answer key: which animal are you?

Column A is the Lion, Column B is the Otter, Column C is the Golden Retriever, Column D is the Beaver. Your highest total is your main animal and your second highest is your backup style. Two totals within three points of each other count as a blend, which is common.

Column A · Takes charge

The Lion

At their best: Gets things moving, makes the call and takes responsibility when nobody else will.

Overused: Can steamroll quieter people and treat disagreement as a challenge.

Needs: A clear goal, room to decide, and short meetings.

Column B · Makes it fun

The Otter

At their best: Brings energy, sells the idea and keeps people talking to each other.

Overused: Loses interest in the details, overpromises and skips the hard conversation.

Needs: Variety, people around them, and recognition.

Column C · Keeps the peace

The Golden Retriever

At their best: Holds the group together and notices who is struggling.

Overused: Says yes too often, avoids conflict and resists change that is needed.

Needs: Stability, appreciation, and time to adjust.

Column D · Gets it right

The Beaver

At their best: Builds things properly and catches the mistake before it ships.

Overused: Over-plans, stalls without full information and can sound critical.

Needs: Clear expectations, time to prepare, and accurate information.

Running it with a group

Hand out page 1 only, give people five quiet minutes, then hand out the answer key. Use the tally sheet to put everyone on one page, then pick one or two of these questions:

  • Which of your top two animals shows up more at work, and which at home?
  • What is one thing people should know about working with your animal?
  • Which animal do you find hardest to work with, and what might they need from you?
  • When the group is under pressure, which animal takes over, and what gets missed?

Want something everyone can do on their phone instead? The free animal personality test scores six traits and matches each person to one of 31 animals, and a free team page puts the whole group on one map.

Questions about the printable test

Is the 4 animal personality test PDF free?
Yes. Download it, print as many copies as you need and use it with a class, team, small group or family. No sign-up or email is needed.
What is in the printable?
Three pages. Page 1 is the test itself: four lettered columns of 12 words each, rated 0 to 3. Page 2 is the answer key with what each animal means. Page 3 is a group tally sheet with discussion questions.
Why are the columns lettered instead of named after the animals?
So people rate the words honestly before they know which animal each column belongs to. Most people would rather be a Lion or an Otter than admit to being a Beaver, and the letters take that out of the scoring.
Is this the original Smalley and Trent test?
No. The Lion, Otter, Golden Retriever and Beaver names follow the four temperaments that Gary Smalley and John Trent made popular, but the word lists, scoring and descriptions in this worksheet are our own. It measures the same four styles.
Is this the 5 minute personality test?
It is the same idea. The Lion, Otter, Golden Retriever and Beaver test is often shared as the "5 minute personality test" because rating the word lists takes about five minutes. This printable works the same way, with our own word lists and a group tally sheet added.
Can I use it at work or in a classroom?
Yes, as a conversation starter. Keep it voluntary and never use the result for hiring, grading or performance decisions. It is a reflection tool, not a validated psychological assessment.
